The Ex - Disturbing Domestic Peace, History Is What's Happening, Tumult, Blueprints For A Blackout, Studio 12 Haarlem 08-04-1984 & Beautiful Frenzy

The Ex's music has undergone significant evolution over the years from their beginnings as a punk band.
Founded by Jos Kleij (better known as G.W. Sok), Terrie Hessels, Geurt and René, the band debuted with a song titled "Stupid Americans" on the Utreg-Punx vinyl 7" compilation released on Rock Against records in Rotterdam.
The release of their first 7" All Corpses Smell The Same followed shortly after that, in 1980.
Through the decades their music has gradually developed into its current form of highly intricate, experimental punk/post-punk/no wave-inspired work.

Expanding beyond punk rock, The Ex have incorporated a wide array of influences, often from non-Western and non-rock sources, such as jazz, noise, free improvisation and ethnic/world music. Some include Hungarian and Turkish folk songs and music from Ethiopia, Congo and Eritrea (the album Turn).
Other examples of branching out stylistically include the improvised double album Instant and a release under the moniker Ex Orkest, a 20 piece big band assembled for performances at Holland Festival.

Band members:
G.W. Sok - vocals (1979–2009)
Terrie Hessels - guitar (1979–present)
René de Groot – bass (1979–1980)
Bas Masbeck - bass (1980–1983)

The Ex's "Studio 12 Haarlem 08-04-1984" is a live recording.

In the early 1980s new musick (Ultra, art-punk) was in Haarlem centred around squatted places in the town itself and in suburbs like Aerdenhout and Heemstede. Artists and musicians created their own working spaces and studio’s, driven by the DIY mentality of the punk movement.
Meeting point was recordshop Amigos and main outlet for the music production in music cassettes and vinyl records was the Studio 12 label, located in a squat at Klein Heiligland 12.
It also became the place where concerts and art exhibitions were organised.

Rites Of Spring - End On End & Six Song Demo

Rites Of Spring, from Washington, DC, formed in 1984 from the ashes of Insurrection, a hardcore band featuring Brendan Canty (drums), Michael Fellows (bass) and Guy Picciotto (guitar).
Following Insurrection's demise, Guy, Brendan and Michael kept jamming together and guitarist Eddie Janney soon joined the mix, while Guy added vocals to his responsibilities.

The people that followed the band made it a point to never miss a gig, as Rites Of Spring seemed to approach every show as if it was their last. The results could be explosive, often resulting in the destruction of their equipment and this may well be one reason that they ended up playing only 15 shows.
It was the boldness of this band that really contributed to the swell of energy, often referred to as "Revolution Summer", that swept over the D.C. scene in 1985.

During their life span, the band released one LP and one 7" EP. They split upon the release of the EP, in January of 1987, when Michael Fellows left the band.
The members of Rites Of Spring reformed as Happy Go Licky in 1987, pursuing a sound very different from Rites Of Spring.

"Strength Thru Oi!" is a compilation album, released in 1981 on Decca Records and reissued in 2003 on Captain Oi!.

When "Strength Thru Oi!" was released, it was controversial because its title was a play on a Nazi slogan ("Strength Through Joy"), and the cover featured Nicky Crane, a British Movement activist who was serving a four-year sentence for racist violence.
Garry Bushell, who was responsible for compiling the album, insists its title was a pun on The Skids' album "Strength Through Joy" and that he had been unaware of the Nazi connotations. He also denied knowing the identity of the skinhead on the album's cover until it was exposed by the Daily Mail two months later.

The tracks 1, 5, 9, 12 and 13 by Garry Johnson and Barney Rubble are spoken word. Track 22 is an acapella chorus.
